Richard Sears wins the first U.S. National Lawn Tennis singles championship in Newport, Rhode Island.

(Sept.) Sears goes on to win the singles championship every year through 1887, and, with Dr. James Dwight and Joseph Clark as his partner, wins six national doubles championships from 1882 to 1887.
